Jordan,

I was just reading some of my old e-mails and came across your post. I can
certainly understand your frustration and negative feelings but, I also echo
others who have written to you when they say that you are probably good at
something that even you're not aware of.

I read Darian's' post about the training centers and I can say that I
attended the center in Ruston, Louisiana and it helped me very much. One
thing, I never understood the NFB's old branding about vision being reduced
to a nuisance but, after training, I realized that it meant that it becomes
a nuisance to us, something we can handle. I know that if you're slower in
something or feel your skills needs upgrading, the center staff can
certainly help with that. I was very slow in cooking but, my instructors
encouraged me to keep going and not to get too emotional with myself. The
best thing I can say is to keep going and if you can, try to find at least
one positive thing in what you're doing. This was the most difficult thing
in mobility class for me. I had been told so many times by less trained
or sighted trainers that I couldn't learn mobility. So, when my instructor
at the center in Louisiana challenged me to do things, I had difficulty
finding positive things to say. He always encouraged me to say something
positive before he would listen to anything negative. This really helped
me.

Okay, I've gone on long enough. I just wanted to write and throw in my two
cents.

Regards,

Denise Shaible

I have a question. Next Sunday is the beginning of our 75 days of service.
What time does our first conference call start on Sunday April 12? How can
I overcome my own negative attitudes? Today,it took me 24 minutes just to
tie 1 pair of shoe laces which is something that I know a kindergardner
could do in less than a minute. Which volunteer, or nonprofit would want
somebody who takes longer than a normal sighted person to do simple tasks?
