[Community-service] Monday Night Chat at Krafters Korner

I actually found Nella’s post to be   intriguing.  Then again, she did ask me to speak on behalf of the division, so that  might have had something to do with it  (smile).
   Really, though, The call was very lively, and we did discuss a lot around making scarves, hats, mittens and things like that  that one can donate to the homeless, babies, children, and brainstorming ways that we might use our talent and love for crafting and make a positive impact in our community.
 a lot of times, when community service is mentioned in the blind community, we talk about the meetings we go to, the,  conversations we have and   the skills we teach blind people.
  These things, which are at the heart of what we do are in service to our blind community, and are things that we, as members of the National Federation of the Blind should continue doing,in my opinion.
  I would submit that these things  certainly don’t require  a community service division to encourage it, because  the activities we use to help our blind brothers and sisters will be  thought of and put into action without this  division, and I think that is how it should be.
  This division was thought of with the idea that we as blind people should give back to the “community”.  Of course the “blind community” is a community, but  there is much more to a community, our larger community, then blind people. 
 giving to our  larger community is a way to  show to the world  that we have plenty to offer, and even to drive  the idea home amongst ourselves that we have so much more than a world of braille, technology, and guide dogs   to share with our sighted friends.  Besides when you take away the technology, the braille, the things that  cause the world to fixate on that  one  characteristic,  people then begin to see a person, and isn’t that what we want to be known for?
 crafting is just as much a talent as writing,or programming, or a ability to relate     to children in that it is a gift that some of us have that isn’t blindness related, that when found and used to help others  enables  us to grow to be more  confident people, and more diverse members of the  federation that can show just  the truth about blindness.
 I want to thank  Nella for having me, and I look forward to exploring what other talents we all might have that can be used to  build our confidence, raise expectations of the blind and strengthen the world which we live in.
