[Community-service] Dumpster Diving

Good morning everyone,

Since this division is all about community service why not organize a dumpster diving project to among other things help a blind person buy their own assistive technology without waighting around for rehab to get it foryou?I know of a couple who needed money to attend business events. They went to area golf tournaments and when the events were over they would collect aluminum cans out of the facility's dumpsters and turned them in to cash. They were doing themselves, the community where they lived, , and the environment a wonderful service. The work is teedious and dirty, but it's a great way to do community service and show our communities that the blind are capable citizens and want to do their part to keep our communities clean and to prevent aluminum cans from ending up in area landfills.

Since blind and sighted individuals would be needed for such tasks as transporting the aluminum cans to collection facilities to be turned into cash this is a wonderful project for this division or a local chapter to undertake. It's a great way to help blind persons buy needed technology so they can volunteer or land a job or for chapters and divisions to self fund the work the federation does.

Thank you guys!
It’s only three hours a week so I don’t know how much they will want to invest in much. Also I don’t have any copies of JAWS left.
Perhaps the JAWS demo? And NVDA is a great idea. Although I’m scared cause I’ve not used it!
LOL
But I will definitely look into it.
Any other ideas on that or any other front desk related things/accommodations would be super appreciated.
I feel like if it were a regular job I would know what to do, but since it’s volunteer and just three hours per week, it’s different because I don’t have the same supports and resources as if I were getting a job.
Thanks so much!

Anna

I don’t know yet exactly what all would be involved, but I’m wondering since it’s just volunteer, they probably don’t have JAWS or something like that on computer or would want to get it. I have it on my laptop but want me to use their computer and systems.
