[Community-service] Desk/computer work

Anna,

Front desk jobs never worked out for me. A lot of paperwork.
I hope it works for you.
For that small a job, no they would not buy jaws, but I was thinking more
so if you were longer term and came in several times a week. For now you
are starting with one day and a standard shift. The desk jobs I looked into
were 4 hours per shift but this one is 3.
You can still do a lot and help many people in 3 hours if its busy.

You can get more copies of jaws license. You just ask them to reset your
authorizations.
Accomodations will vary depending on your job.
If you are at the desk of a studio, its likely they need you to check people
in and out and I really do not see a good accomodation for this.

Some other accomodations I used were:
Labeling hard copy material in braille
Using a phone headset
Receiving email copies of lists and instruction whereas everyone else got
hard copies
Receiving hands on instruction on the phone system; other volunteers just
saw the labeled buttons whereas I memorized it
Asking staff or participants to be more verbal; this was very challenging
when working with kids as they seemed to forget they needed to identify
themselves

I volunteered with a summer camp a few times and I found I could not assist
with some activities due to the visual nature of it such as crafts where
they colored or cut out certain things. I actually have some vision and
could see what they did if I was close up but not enough really to help them
do it. The kids showed me their crafts when they were done.
The kids also played video games in free time. The director tried to be
accomodating by asking kids to be verbal and reinforcing the request to use
words not gestures. It was nice of them to email me the schedule ahead of
time so I knew what would happen.

I do not know what equipment you have but if you read braille and have an
electronic notetaker, I found it helpful to save the emailed files on a USB
or SD card and read on my BrailleNote.

I hope it works out.

Thank you guys!
It’s only three hours a week so I don’t know how much they will want to
invest in much. Also I don’t have any copies of JAWS left.
Perhaps the JAWS demo? And NVDA is a great idea. Although I’m scared cause I’ve
not used it!
LOL
But I will definitely look into it.
Any other ideas on that or any other front desk related
things/accommodations would be super appreciated.
I feel like if it were a regular job I would know what to do, but since it’s
volunteer and just three hours per week, it’s different because I don’t have
the same supports and resources as if I were getting a job.
Thanks so much!

Anna
