Hello all:

 

        We had two pieces of good news on the legislative front yesterday. 

 

        As you will recall, part of House Bill 6654 would have stripped BESB
clients of their exclusive rights to operate concessions at state parks,
rights they have had since the 1940's. That bill had passed the Environment
Committee and was ready for a vote by the full House. However, it was
referred to the Finance Committee and that committee removed the offending
sections of the bill at its meeting yesterday. The bill moves forward but
without the part that would have hurt our clients and friends.  I want to
thank all of the people who made their voices heard by calling and writing
members of the General Assembly. In particular, the NFB and the blind
concession operators themselves deserve credit. You should also be
particularly grateful to the two Chairs of the Finance Committee, Senator
John Fonfara of Hartford and Representative Pat Widlitz of Guilford.

 

        In addition, we saw final passage by both the State Senate and the
State House of the DORS (Department of Rehabilitation Services) agency bill,
Senate Bill 853.  That bill, once it is signed by the Governor, will remove
some antiquated dollar caps on how well BRS and BESB can serve some of our
clients. It will also streamline other agency activities so that we can work
more productively and effectively.
