I think some of us should try it out and find out. Beth

I think that most of this message is very positive and indeed a good thing.
The only part of it that somewhat concerns me is that there is mention of an
idea that contact sports are not ideal for the blind. Does anyone know if
this camp specifically has more of a custodial view toward the blind?

Hello, I have water skied since I was 7 years old and love it. I have been
legally blind since 18 and now totally blind and was still able to have a
wonderful time skiing. I just have to rely on the boat persons to let me
know when it is safe to go out of the wake area of the back of the boat.
Thank you so much for sharing this info with us. I will distribute your
information. Beth Rival

Dear Elizabeth Rival, President @ NFB of CT Outreach Office-

We are hosting a free 4-day camp called Soaring with the Eagles in June that
is designed to teach visually impaired and blind children ages 6-17 to
waterski and wakeboard. I'm writing in the hopes that you can help spread
the word to your network about the camp in case any of the parents wish to
enroll their children. This event will be completely free of charge to kids
who are blind or who are visually impaired. I include a poster for the
event in case you can hang it up in your office or can forward to your
network.

This will be the second time we host a 4-day camp designed specifically to
teach children who are blind or are visually impaired to waterski and
wakeboard. We cannot overstate how beneficial our first camp was for the
kids. Not only did they learn a new sport, but they also went home with new
friends, a lake full of confidence and greater sense of independence, as
well as the realization that they could, given the opportunity, "soar beyond
the boundaries." We believe part of the reason water sports, specifically
waterskiing and wakeboarding, may be more beneficial than other adaptive
sports for the blind/visually impaired is that by nature they are not
contact or team sports.
