Good morning Deb & NFB of Connecticut;

You're right of course, unfortunately Janet & I are going through somewhat of a difficult time and some times as you say money gets in the way of progress. I was reminded of this yesterday when a friend who is sighted called and explained to me that she just lost her Father last Friday, as I sat and listened to her I realized that taking the time to listen, and just offer to read the obituary that she was sending to the paper is what it's all about. Yes I call my self a federationist but I'm not really sure if it's the blind community that I'm here to help or just people in general. Take for example something as simple and perhaps as silly as being home to take care of a dog. my niece's dog has a serious issue about being alone, and although I'm not receiving a monetary fee for sitting with the dog. I do realize that I'm providing an important service for this soul, I believe it's written somewhere, although where I don't know. For none of us are so great that we can afford to pass up the chance to help or be loved by any living creature in the world. I suppose I just temporarily forgot that. I do however have to admit that I some times get jealous or envious when I can't keep up with what's going on around me.

Thanks for listing guys & as I always end my face book posts remember to smile some one out there besides me that is loves you all

Rich

Hi Rich,

I have witnessed your strong, friendly and motivating personality at the conventions and see that you do have a lot to offer the world. It is unfortunate that money gets in the way of progress a lot of the times and of course our transportation challenges. I pray you will find a way to get some training to make life better. In friendship, Debbie

These unfortunate realities are exactly why we have to fight. It doesn't have to be that way, but it is right now. If we remain vigilant, and, if we put forth a good Connecticut work ethic, we can get the results that we need.

We can fight to drive down the cost of transportation. We can fight to get our members the training they need to be able to participate in the world.

If you would be ready to take the plunge and go to training, I would love to be able to help you get there.

Yours,

Justin

Good morning Beth & all members;

I don't wish to be negative and I still believe in our cause and will continue to fight for the rights of blind folks as much as I can. But I must add this thought. Simply because it's easy to be passionate and wave the flag when you're a professional student and have the world at your feet. But for the average blind person who struggles just to survive you start to lose faith, and when life just keeps screwing you over and over, you find it difficult to keep your prospective I've been in the work force now from 1979 to 2011 at which time I have been slowly squeezed out of society to the point of complete and udder lack of self confidence. I have come to the realization that unless you can afford to pay the high price for transportation or could walk to where you need to go, there's no sense going anywhere, this is what I'm faced with, no I'm not wining although I'm sure most of you may think I am. I'm simply facing the reality of what the real world is about.

Have a great day, and I am envious of those of us who are lucky enough to still be able to live the dream. As for me. I am here temporarily, but one knows just how long.

Rich

Hello Justin,

I am so sorry that you ahd any issues and here is my email agai nto you.

I wanted to know the following informatio becasue President Obama is coming to Hartford on Wednesday to meet with the Govonor,senators and others t ospeak about the minium wage increase as taht CT is doing it over 3 years. What if anything do you know if disabled person will benefit from this action as well. We've been battling the change and discrimination of employers such as Goodwill, Marriott,etc and the bill that the senate have been hearing is H R 831 has this bill fully gone int oeffect/passed by teh senate whic his for subminium fair wages but does it as well enact/protect from discrimination.

Have Senators Murphy and blumenthal been supportative,vocal,effective in our behalf for these issues . What would you want them to know to have in hand when they are with the Govonor on Wednesday with teh President.

With the case of Goodwill who were not paying fairly do you know exactly know the numbers of what they were doing being if minium wage here is 720/40 how much under that were the ydoing if you know.

Thank you so much for assisting me with providing me wit hthis information which will help us all.

Elizabeth

    Dear Elizabeth,

    I am sincerely grateful for your interest in the fight to end subminimum wages. I have read your message a few times but am struggling to understand what it is that you want to know. Honestly, the abundance of typographical errors would not be much of a problem if they did not erode the clarity of the message, but I regret to report that they do. If you could please edit and resend your message, I would be happy to help answer your questions.

    I also wish to remind you and others that Edward Shaham has taken over for me to spearhead our legislative activities. While I am happy to offer any help that I can, Edward’s understanding of and ability to research these issues should not be underestimated.

    Lastly, I want to encourage you to feel comfortable reaching out to Rose Sloan at our national office. She is the one leading our efforts to achieve fair wages by fixing the Workforce Investment Act and also getting the House to pass HR 831 and the Senate to introduce and pass a companion bill to HR 831. It is certainly good to use our resources here in Connecticut, but helping people understand this issue is part of why we pay her the big bucks. Her phone number is: 410-659-9314, ext. 2441. You can also email Rose at rsloan at nfb.org.

    Sincerely yours,

    Justin Salisbury

        Please note the reminder from our education team a the NFB Jernigan Institute:

        Just a quick reminder that Monday is Read Across America Day! This celebration of literacy always takes place on the weekday closest to Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2, since his writings continue to inspire children to fall in love with reading. Once again, we ask that you celebrate the day anyway you can to emphasize the important role of Braille in literacy for the blind. If your affiliate is holding a party or activity in honor of Read Across America Day, please let us know! We'd love to get photos or videos of your celebration. We're also asking that everyone send us a photo or video of someone reading Braille. We're especially eager to see people reading Braille near a famous landmark, so we can really show that Braille is being used all across the country! (Of course, we understand that in many parts of the country, those landmarks are obscured by snow!)

        If you have any questions, please contact Liz Spann at espann at nfb.org or by phone at 410-685-5653, extension 2418.
