Subject: Social Security's Creation of the New Center for Section

504 Compliance

 

Dear Colleague:

 

The Social Security Administration is pleased to announce the creation of
the new Center for Section 504 Compliance.  Section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination against individuals with
disabilities, and requires the federal government to provide individuals
with meaningful access to government facilities, programs, and services.

 

Although the provision of accommodations to the public is not new, the
Center for 504 Compliance is new to Social Security.  Acting Commissioner
Carolyn W. Colvin is committed to improving our service to individuals with
disabilities.  The Center for Section504 Compliance will provide guidance to
Social Security offices to ensure that our customers with disabilities have
meaningful access when conducting business with us.

 

The Center for Section 504 Compliance will have a Toll-Free Number, where
individuals may report issues and make suggestions regarding meaningful
access.  The toll-free number is 1-844-881-9061.  The business hours will be
Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 4:00pm Eastern Time (except federal
holidays).
