[Ct-nfb] Happy Thanksgiving

Hi, Eileen and Everyone!

Yes, it could be very demeaning when people treat you like a child. My relatives are okay with me, but I have more trouble with strangers. For example, one time my cousin and I were in Costco and we were sampling different foods. There was one particular item that had a toothpick in it and the person handing out the food said to my cousin, "Tell her there's a toothpick in it," to which I replied, "You already did, mam." I had a slight smile on my face when I said this, but it's very degrading when people speak to anyone this way. Then when a friend tries to tell a waitress or waiter what I want, I interrupt her and tell them myself. Then when the waiter goes away, I just tell them to please not speak for me, but I try to tell them in a nice tone. They understand and apologize profusely and realize how wrong they were. I, of course, accept their apology and move on.

There's a way to be assertive and be nice about it, but if they persist, then you have to be more firm with these people. There's a saying which is "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar."

Anyway, that's my take on the situation and hope this helps you.

Esther
