We have just received word that Junerose Killian passed away on January 30th. Junerose and her husband Jimmie (who passed away last year) were a long-time members of our affiliate. I am including her obituary below.

Groton - Junerose Mary (Kuchler) Killian, 91, a resident of Houston, Texas from 1950 and of Niantic since 1969, passed away on Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, in Groton.

Mrs. Killian, the daughter of Charles and Alice (Johnson) Kuchler, was born on June 20, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Like her father, she was a graduate of Cornell University as was her husband of 67 years, Jimmie, who died in 2016.

Our mother was almost always in motion and on the move, whether it was camping or travelling with or visiting her children or visiting other countries with Jimmie or participating in Cornell University reunions or activities of The Sons of Norway. She also enjoyed physical exercise like bicycling, hiking, walking and even cross country skiing in several different states, including the Sons of Norway "Ski for Light" for blind skiers, and rode a tandem bike with one of her sons in another race.

Although she was proud of her children, relatives and friends and what they offer and promise for the future, she also was and is recognized by the State of Connecticut as winner of the Emily Foster Wells award in 2009 which exemplifies the successes and capabilities of people who are blind. This award does not just honor past achievement, but gives inspiration to others of a hopeful future by spotlighting academic success, community involvement and entrepreneurial spirit. This award identified her as "Cornell graduate, mother of eight, lecturer, lifelong advocate and activist in both the local community and nationally in cultural, sports and disability issues."

She is survived by her eight children, Roger (Diana) of Newton, N.C., Peter (Glenda) of Sacramento, Calif., Timothy of Hanahan, S.C., Betty (Mike) Murphy of Port Hueneme, Calif., Fred of New London, Kenneth (Janette) of Ringgold, Ga., Glenn (Morrie) of Portsmouth N.H., and Laurin (Leslie) of Groton; she is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

All of us are very grateful and thankful for the aid and assistance of staff of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and Groton Regency and for the counsel and guidance of VITAS hospice care during this transition in her life. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Kuchler - Killian Memorial Scholarship, c/o National Federation of the Blind, 805 Fifth Ave., Grinnell, IA 50112 or Niantic Baptist Church, 443 Main St., Niantic, CT 06357 or National Federation of the Blind, 580 Burnside Ave. # 1, East Hartford, CT 06108.
