Dear Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs alumni,

We hope this message finds you well.

As you may have heard, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that it is revising its Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) regulation on the transportation of service animals by air to ensure a safe and accessible air transportation system. 

For the past three years, the Assistance Dog International (ADI) North American Board of Directors, their Legislative and Advocacy Committee, along with several guide and service dog schools, including the Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs, have been working with the DOT and the airlines to accomplish three major objectives:

*	To align the definition of a service animal with that of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) so only trained service/guide dogs will be allowed airline access.
*	Psychiatric Service Dogs to be recognized by the airlines as legitimate Service Dogs
*	Emotional Support Animals will not be allowed the same airline access as Service Dogs

The DOT received more than 15,000 comments on the notice of proposed rulemaking. The final rule announced addresses concerns raised by individuals with disabilities, airlines, flight attendants, airports, other aviation transportation stakeholders, and other members of the public, regarding service animals on aircraft.

We will continue to work with the airlines and ADI to help provide guidance in creating a more streamlined process for those travelling with an assistance dog; and as additional information is released on this new policy, we will be sure to keep you up to date.
