[CT-NFB] The effect of vision loss and partners

Hi everyone,

If you mean the dissertation by Dr. Vernon Humphrey, President of the National Association of Blind Veterans, it’s more of a big research paper than a speech. Here is a link to a page on the Southern Miss website, where you can read the abstract (which is like a short summary) and actually download the whole dissertation.

https://aquila.usm.edu/dissertations/128/

If enough people think this is interesting, maybe the Connecticut affiliate would consider inviting him to come on a conference call and talk about his dissertation and what he discovered. I’m sure he usually gets contacted to speak about veteran matters, but he’s a well-rounded person with many areas of expertise. He currently teaches communications and public speaking at Columbus State University.

Stay well,

Justin

No there was no sign in for that speech, but I bet Justin would be willing to share it if we asked.

Well said Mary. I also find that humor goes along way. We have to make peace with the things we cannot figure out how to do anymore and celebrate when we find new ways of enjoying things without eyesight.

Hi everyone,

Dr. Vernon Humphrey, President of the National Association of Blind Veterans, actually wrote his dissertation on this topic. His PhD is in Communications, and it’s all about how the communications between partners change when one of them acquires a disability, perhaps specifically blindness.

Stay well,

Justin

Deb,
Thanks for sharing this one. A couple's dynamic changes when one partner undergoes a major life change.
Whether it is a sensory loss, functional loss or major change due to accident or illness, couples need to re negotiate their roles.
Mary
