As a Hadley learner, you know that vision loss can be devastating to the person experiencing it, as well as their loved ones. But amidst the devastation, Clifford Miyashiro and Debbie Smith found help and hope through Hadley.

Clifford was first diagnosed with glaucoma in his late 40s. Today, at age 74, Clifford has no vision in his right eye and just a narrow tunnel of vision in his left.

In 2020, Clifford realized he needed to learn new ways of doing things and turned to Hadley. He started with Hadley’s iPhone workshops, which helped him adjust the settings on his smart phone so that he can see the screen better. Then he learned how to use VoiceOver, which allowed him to listen to texts, emails and news apps on the phone rather than try to read them.

Although Debbie Smith’s story is quite different from Clifford’s, they both share a deep love for their grandchildren. Born with multiple genetic conditions, Debbie’s 18-month-old granddaughter, Gracie, suffers from vision loss. Feeling helpless, Debbie turned to Hadley to learn braille so that one day she could help Gracie with reading and schoolwork.

"I want her to have every opportunity in life and if the most I can do for her is help with homework, then that’s what I’m going to do."

Currently, Hadley offers nearly 700 online workshops, discussion groups and podcast episodes – all available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year – at no cost.
