Hi Deb,
For Christmas last year, Paul bought me, my sister, and Beth a Birdie, personal safety alarm. I has a loud alarm and flashing strobe light. You pull the top ring to activate and then re-insert it when no longer needed.
It is light weight and comes with a large wire hoop to attached it to a purse, but you don't have to use it.
When I go for my walks I carry it along with pepper spray (the spray is more for the bears that roam my neighborhood).
Take care,
Cheri
