[CT-NFB] Statement of the Board of Directors to the Federation Community Regarding Location of 2024 National Convention | National Federation of the Blind

To Nathanael and all.

Please remember, there is a huge convention center and attached hotel in Hartford which, in my humble opinion could take a national convention. The facilities held an amateur radio convention with over 3000 attendees several years ago with ease. Of course, a national convention would require a lot of work but I feel we are up to it.

So, there's my food for thought for today.

Greetings, all, from my webmail from Houston, We don't know if the statement means that we couldn't get out of some contract with Rosen resorts. Considering that the statement makes a commitment for greater input for National Conventions beyond 2025, it's a reasonable assumption, but I'm always careful about making assumptions because you know what they say when you assume: "you make an ass out of u and me".
This decision, the board statement, and discussions here and on social media raise complicated matters that may well touch each of us personally and emotionally. What I, as a member, am proudest of is that our leaders acknowledged real concerns but ultimately kept the decision focused on the thing that brings all of us together: blindness. And our quality of respecting all of our members from every background. We have steered as clear of politics (which in this case are particularly divisive otherwise) as we could to keep the focus on blindness while insisting that our host property shares our values of respect, dignity, and inclusion.
We in Connecticut are a wonderful example. I've met blind people from all backgrounds, and we treat each other with the greatest respect and dignity and get our job of advocacy and empowerment done. If we can find a National Convention location in Connecticut that meets our requirements--and importantly at an acceptable price point--we should proudly share that with our Federation sisters and brothers especially for 2026...
Best,
Nathanael Wales
