Opportunity to Participate in a User Study with Northeastern University

Dear Carroll Center for the Blind Community,

Are you an adult with reading proficiency in uncontracted Unified English
Braille (UEB)? If so, we invite you to apply to participate in a
Northeastern University 3D-Printed braille evaluation user study. This study
will take place on the Northeastern University campus at 440 Huntington Ave,
Boston, MA 02115. Specifically, the study will take place in West Village H,
Room 302.

Participants will be prompted with 3D-printed plates, each of which will
feature one braille sentence. Some plates will be sanded for comfort, and
some plates will be un-sanded. Participants will be asked to read sentences
on various plates aloud. Participants will also be asked to rate their
reading experience for comfort and clarity. There may be minor physical
discomfort from reading poorly-printed braille text.

Applicants selected to participate who attend the study will receive a $40
e-gift certificate through the Tango Reward Genius Program, which will be
emailed following participation in the study. Compensation in this study
will be managed and administered by Northeastern University.

If you are interested in participating, please fill out

What is the Northeastern University Braille Usability Study All About?

3D printing technologies have been used in creating graphics for people with
visual impairments. However, our guest researchers have found limited
evaluations of how comfortable and effective this technology is given how
print quality is affected by orientation. The purpose of this research is to
determine the differences in how braille readers perform a reading task
given the restrictions of 3D printing at various angles. Participants may
help researchers better understand the trade-offs between 3D-printed braille
production and reading experience quality.

For more information please contact Eduardo Puerta (315-262-7219), the
person mainly responsible for the research. You can also contact Cody Dunne
