Good Morning, Casey,

Connecticut is still hiring 2 teachers of blind students (or TVIs). Of
course, please share this announcement widely; it closes on October 5, and
it really does look like the state's recruiter, anyway, is really trying to
sell these positions.

I took a careful look at the qualifications because questions have come up
in the past about applicants needing a master's degree or maybe at least
working towards one. At least for this announcement now, the minimum is that
a student in a "vision studies program" (gotta love that Visual Industrial
Complex terminology!) have 12 semester hours of work. How exactly would the
program at Tech qualify (other than we don't use Visual Industrial Complex
terminology)? At what point in the program would a student have that?

The affiliate continues discussing how to fill these needs for teachers of
our blind kids, so any suggestions on how qualifications could be made more
inclusive-and maybe even consider highly lived experience-would be very
helpful. If a student with lived experience as a blind person started the
process of the Tech program this week (application, admission, start of
classes, etc.), when might she reach the qualifications of the announcement?
And how could we adjust the announcement to make her qualified to fill this
need earlier? We are prepared to work with the state to make adjustments and
would have no hesitation to propose legislation in the full session starting
in January.

for Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) within the Department of Aging
and Disability Services (ADS), Bureau of Education and Services for the
Blind (BESB).

These Education Consultant 1 (TVI) positions offer a meaningful opportunity
for certified TVIs, or those currently enrolled in a Vision Studies program,
to make a direct impact on the lives of students who are blind, have low
vision, or experience multiple impairments. Through specialized instruction,
collaboration, and advocacy, these roles help students gain independence,
access their education, and build strong foundations for life beyond the
classroom.

Position Locations: 

*	Litchfield (Litchfield County): Ideal for those who enjoy the
scenic, historic charm of New England countryside
*	Norwalk (Fairfield County): Perfect for individuals seeking a
vibrant coastal community with convenient access to NYC

Schedule & Work Environment:

*	Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-4:15 PM (35 hours/week)
*	. Hybrid work environment with statewide travel to student homes and
schools

Candidate Requirements:

*	Degree in vision studies OR current enrollment in an accredited
Vision Studies program
*	Certification in special education in the area of teaching the blind
or partially sighted, OR eligibility for a Durational Shortage Area Permit
(DSAP)
