[Diabetes-talk] My cure of Type 1 Diabetes!

Hi Eileen,
No, not personal at all. A cadaver. I just know that he died suddenly, was healthy and a large person because I got 690,000 islets which is a very large amount. Some people only get half that amount. They think that is why I am doing so well. I had been on the waiting list since February of this year. Any pancreas will not due-it has to have a certain amount of islets and they need to be in the right condition. Eileen, I don't know what area you are in. I met the woman that does dogs 4 diabetics today who had an islet cell transplant almost a year ago. She is doing great. She doesn't need a dog anymore and neither do I-for my blood sugar that is! I sent you an email message a while ago about the study they are doing in Chicago. Did you get it?
Are you OK? I was worried when I didn't hear from you.

Sally

Sally:

I hope this isn't to personal a question, but I was wondering if for the
type of transplant you have had, do the cells come from a live donor, or
does it have to be through a cadavour? Just wondering if any of the
donating for these cells has changed.

Thanks.

Eileen

Hi Cheryl,
Many of the medications have already been decreased. Here is what I am
taking now:
      Sirolimus (Rapamune®)

      Belatacept

      Atovaquone

      Valganciclovir (Valcyte®) through month 6

Belatacept Is a new drug for this protocol and has not yet been approved by
the FDA. I am having weekly labs and they are quite willing to alter the
meds if there is anything that does not agree with me. I was nauseous the
first week, but all that has gone. I feel very good. Although Type 1 is
not life threatening in and of itself as is kidney failure, the quality of
my life is drastically improved. Type 1's lead not only a disciplined life,
but it needs to be regimented. For the first time in my life, i have the
freedom to exercise whenever I want and for as long as I want to. Type 1's
really do weigh their food so that they can get an accurate measurement of
carbohydrates to inject the proper amount of insulin. No more ambulance
rides wit paramedics for low blood sugars! I know that diet and exercise
are the best treatment for Type 2. ...not just a little bit
important...very, very important!

I am very happy with my decision to get a transplant and would do it again
if at any time it is necessary. I could not have lived for 52 years with
diabetes if I did not follow the rules, and I certainly intend to follow all
instructions now. I have just received the greatest gift! I am very
grateful to the donor, researchers and doctors. I need to keep a log on
everything and my husband has been helping me with all of it.

Take care,

Sally
