Grant:

Take a look at the December issue of the NFB's monthly magazine, the Braille
Monitor, which may be found at http://www.nfb.org under the "Publications"
link. You will find an article concerning the ways blind persons can measure
and draw up their own insulin.

At present, the Count-a-dose is no longer being made. However, DDI, the
manufacturer of the Prodigy Voice talking blood glucose monitor, is in the
process of securing FDA approval and if this is granted, will make the
50-unit Count-a-dose.

There are some other insulin measuring devices out there; the article
describes them. However, none are as good as the Count-a-dose.

On the other hand, I assure you that a blind person can easily use the
FlexPen and the various forms of the HumaPen (both disposable and
cartridge); I use the disposables all the time. One just counts clicks just
as one does with the Count-a-dose.

IF your insurance will pay for it, go for the pens! I think Novalin 70/30 is
available in pen form. If not, the Count-a-dose should be available some
time next year.
