Greetings, all.
For those who can download NLS digital talking books, check out the January, 2009 issue of "Diabetes Forecast", the monthly magazine of the American Diabetes Association. While, like the author Gretchen Becker, I often find the magazine almost too cheerful, this month's guest editorial is superb. It outlines a strategy for diabetes control I wholeheartedly endorse -- one emphasizing moderation and eschewing extremes.
In another article, we learn that the latest research indicates that, when five or more grams of fiber are part of the carb count for a particular item, rather than subtracting the whole fiber amount from the total carb count to get the effective carb count, one should subtract *half* the fiber carb count from the total to get the net carbs as it now appears that some of the fiber is turned into glucose within the body by anaerobic bacteria! FASCINATING!
And in the "Resources" section, under glucose meters, the Prodigy Voice is favorably mentioned and accurately described.
I'm not done reading the mag yet but so far, it and all the issues of "Diabetes Forecast" this past fall have been great and the recipes even edible (sometimes I wonder where ADA gets its dietitians!).
