Dar:
I certainly hear you. And conventions are becoming more expensive by the
year although hotels are hurting at the moment so perhaps they'll wake
up a bit and figure they need customers (though obviously not
impecunious ones). So please don't misinterpret what I say below as a
lack of understanding or empathy.
But to some extent, where there's a will, there's a way. Although
neither you nor I are as young as we once were, I can remember the days
when we slept four or more to a room (I slept on the floor at one
Washington Seminar) and one can live a long time on protein bars, peanut
butter sandwiches, string cheese, some fruit -- you get the idea. Some
folks find convention so inspiring or worthwhile that they make what
would seem to others ludicrous sacrifices to attend.
And some folks save a bit each month -- even if only a bit -- to help.
And they participate enough in their state NFB affiliate and local NFB
chapters such that they are noticed and can get help to attend
conventions if the affiliate has the wherewithal.
Only you know your circumstances and can judge what you can do and what
not. And certainly it's not as easy to attend conventions now hotels are
frowning more and more about bringing in food (as the Presidential Suite
used to do). But it continues to surprise me how many people whom I
thought could never manage it seem to get to the conventions. But this
economy may well bring down the numbers a bit.

I understand what you are saying.
One of the things that gets me going to the conventions, you need money
for food for getting to and from air port, for hotel and then and then
and then.
I just don't know how everyone can come up with this every year.
Oh me.
all in my dreams.
then after a week it is all over.
I would love to meet people,
but to think I spent so much for one week is over whelming.
Just my thoughts.
