Dear Renee, Glad to have you on this site. May I share a bit of my own
experience with diabetes?
Seven years ago I was told I had diabetes-II. I had had pre-diabetes
for some years, but in those days, the doctors did not consider it a serious
matter yet. But, if the medical community had told me to consider myself to
have full blown diabetes and treat it accordingly, I probably would not have
DM now.
See if your community hospitals have a diabetes department. If so, sign up
for their week-long seminar to get grounded, then work to change your
lifestyle to accommodate the requirements for exercise regularly, reduced
food portions, and possible medication.
Diabetes is a progressive disease. If not controlled and kept in an
acceptable range, it leads to coronary artery disease, strokes, and heart
attacks.
We gain weight because we have more calories coming in than we are burning
up, so the excess is stored as fat. Some folks can eat and eat and gain not
a pound. But some of us can smell food cooking and the scales do a hiccup.
I initially lost 45 pounds on a steady scale. Then at 105 pounds my
appestat re-set itself and I lost no more weight for months. So I cut down
on food portions and the weight started down again, but then went back up a
bit. It has fluctuated for several years between 215 and 225. The missing
ingredient in my treatment regime is insufficient physical activity.
But, anyway, Renee, consider your diabetes seriously. Controlling those
pesky glucose numbers is not easy. After all, if it were easy, everybody
would be doing it and we would not be having this conversation. Read the
literature from the library. Subscribe to the periodical magazines to keep
up with changes and how others deal with their own diabetes. Join diabetes
support groups. Read up especially on most acceptable foods, such as green
veggies, seafood, chicken or turkey, lean roast beef, etc. Avoid processed
meats. Read the ingredient and nutrition charts on food packages.
Splurging once a week usually does not throw off the appestat, but too many
things have more calory power than we think.
Right now I am in better physical and mental health than I've been in
decades. My two preoccupations of health problems are my diabetes and
general allergies.
The last time I got a medical checkup, my doctor said my health was so good,
I could live to be 80.
I told him I was already 80.
He said, "See? What did I tell you?" (big grin)

Subject: [Diabetes-talk] Hello Everyone
> My name is Renee Pavlus. I live in Utah, and have been recently diagnosed
with having type two diabetes...I am fifty-five, and to be honest it is in
my family on my mother's side, mostly due to weight gain...I am not on any
meds, and am trying to work with diet. Its been almost two
> years since I was told that I have to watch things. Being at the
beginning I was told that I could due little things so that the illness
won't get worse, for now, eating is the issue. Any suggestions? I am
trying to stay off the soda, I like pepsi, and probably eat too many
carbs...I have a very dear friend who has been waiting for a kidney for
seven years...I see how the disease has effected her, and how her life is
altered. I wasn't able to go to convention this year, but will be there
next year if my finances improve...the last blog mentioned about getting out
in the community and speaking to groups, perhaps I can due some out reach,
although I am so new at this that I don't feel knowledgeable yet. For me,
blindness was not caused by diabetes, I was one of those premature babies of
the 1950's, and RLf, or ROP is the cause. It will be good to connect with
other people. I am thinking of having non invasive lap band surgery in the
near future, has anyone experienced the Lap Band...I don't care about
appearance, just weight control...Thanks Renee Does any one use facebook,
my address is Renee Radicioni Pavlus, and my email is psychmom3 at gmail.com
