Michael,
I was away when you joined the list and I would want to wish you a belated welcome also. I hope your surgery had gone well. You noted it was not diabetes related, but any shock to the body, inclusive of surgery, for someone with diabetes can send your sugar levels into a spiral state.
I have found your writings of how persons with diabetes and blindness in Africa have very little information and support to be a reminder of persons living in other countrys.
With the guidance of the Lord on your shoulder may you bring much peace, comfort and information to those whom are willing and able to listen.
Vinny

Hi Dotty.
Michael here from Pietermaritzburg, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.
I have been a diabetic for the last 12 years, and although I am blind, I
rather jokingly told a diabetologist that I saw the other day, that it
was not his to claim the credit or discredit for my blindness since I
have been blind from birth, long before I was diagnosed with type II
diabetes.
Here in South Africa in general, we too, have an institutionalised
ignorance concerning diabetes, and in my experience as a diabetes
counsellor, people simply do not want to hear the truth.
Oddly enough, one picks up the best diabetes management remedies outside
the diabetic clinic and preferably from people with blood sugar counts
in excess of 360, to use the terms in the USA. To get the numbers we use
here, you would have to divide the US readings by 18 and so 360 would
convert to 20in our terms. Of course, I am just facecious about the good
diabetic remedies (grin).
I think that it is common cause on this list that regular testing is
imperative, especially since there are a number of things that can
affect blood sugars. However, I don't think that your blood sugars
should determine what meals you are going to eat especially since food
is not the only factor that impacts on blood sugar.
I would like to help with lots of tips and tricks, but if I may do so, I
will write you off list. You might also want to chat to me on Skype. My
Skype ID. is "krapleachim" without the quotes, of course.
Wishing you all the best.
