Bonna:
There is no fully-accessible insulin pump on the immediate horizon. You know
about Prodigy's efforts in this sphere. Like every other diabetes company
I've encountered, Prodigy is heir to the twin goblins of slipping timetables
and the FDA.
There is another accessible pump also in the offing but it, too, is not on
the immediate horizon, its inventor's statements to the contrary
notwithstanding. It consists of an accessible talking remote control that
will purportedly control many Medtronics pumps. It will potentially be
manufactured and tested by Medtronics. It was invented by a gentleman who
works for Access Solutions, the folks who build the DECtalk USB speech
synthesizer. Access Solutions couldn't get Medtronics attention for quite a
while and it certainly couldn't afford the cost of FDA 510(k) vetting of the
control/pump combinations. However, Medtronics is working with Access
Solutions to get the device (which actually works) through the FDA
verification process.
You can read more about the potential device at <http://www.pump-mate.com>.
If you truly want an accessible pump, my recommendation is that when your
pump bites the big one, you should go back on shots for the time being till
one of these pumps comes on the market. But I'm not a pump user so what I
say may not carry much weight.

Hi all:
'
Does anyone have any news on a talking insulin pump? I wanted to see if any
of you knew about another company other than pradagee? Pradage states that
they were coming out with one this summer, now they say some time in the
near future. I am do to update my Mini med pump and do not want to spend the
money for the upgrade if there will be a pump on the market that will
address my blindness.
Calling for help and suggestions.
Thanks,
Bonna Williamson

Cheryl,
Thanks for the suggestion. The cooking list is actually one of the
listserves I usually promote my blog on, and I actually wrote a version
of this specifically for a theme on the cooking listserve. Someone on
there suggested it would make for a good descriptive piece showing the
power of the other senses. It struck me that I could use it for my blog!
Smile. Thanks for reading and the advice. It's always welcome.
Sincerely,
Bridgit Kuenning-Pollpeter
