Hello, Linda,
I feel that in some ways you are my soul mate. I am also congenitally
blind, a fairly recently diagnosed type 2 diabetic and a classical
singer. I can understand your feelings of being overwhelmed. I was
completely blown away when I was diagnosed. I also blamed myself until
I began taking a masteral course in Positive Psychotherapy from which I
learned that one explanation of diabetes is a response to stress. Well,
as a blind person, English teacher and singer, I don't have to ask
where the stress comes from.
As for how to deal with the diabetes, there are many approaches, and
you will have to decide which is best for you. There is everything from
the diets on the American Diabetes Association website and those in the
Bernstein books to intuitive eating and the Health at Every Size movement.
This list was a godsend to me, much more help than the doctors, except
for one, who said: "Moderation in all things is the watchword here,
too." The philosophy on this list is very simple: "Live by your meter."
>From one singer to another, I would like to correspond with you off
list, as I have some issues to talk about with you which relate
particularly to singers, especially to diabetes and singing.
