[Diabetes-talk] Lunch

Hi Debbie,

Do you mean "counting carbs" as in learning the official way to do it,
counting 15 carbs as one carb unit? Or do you mean finding out the grams of
carb in a given food?

For the former, I believe the American Diabetes Association still has their
pamphlet on the subject, and probably activities on the site, too (I haven't
checked them out for a while). For finding the grams of carb in a given
food, I recommend Calorie King, Sparkpeople.com, MyFitnessPal, or one of the
other popular sites on the web. Or you can go directly to the USDA nutrient
database through a couple of links. I think the easiest one to use is

ndb.fnic.usda.gov

This is the home page. On the page is a link that says "Stary Your Search
Here," and it gives you a list of types of foods. Select the category and
you will get a list of brands (both in this list and the last, the number
under the category or brand name is the number of items in that category).
Then you can type key words into the edit box, and an item or list comes up.
This database is the best source of nutrient information, and is what every
other site is based on. You can download this database to your computer if
you want. It's a government database, so is not copyrighted.

Hope this helps.

Sandi
