How Long Does Exercise Affect Blood Sugar Levels?

Exercising in the morning before breakfast helps to prevent a high rise in blood sugar in diabetics only after breakfast and lunch. It does not prevent the high rise in blood sugar that follows the evening dinner meal (Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Feb, 2014;46(2):232-238). Nine diabetics exercised before breakfast for three consecutive bouts of 20 minutes at approximately 60 percent of their maximum heart rate. The exercise lowered their rise in blood sugar after breakfast and lunch, but not after supper. The authors concluded that diabetics need to exercise every day to help prevent high rises in blood sugar after meals. They should also advise limiting foods that cause a high rise in blood sugar late in the day, when people tend to be inactive.

High Rises in Blood Sugar Cause the Side Effects of Diabetes
Preventing a high rise in blood sugar after meals helps to prevent heart attacks and all of the other complications in diabetics and in healthy people also. Blood sugar always rises after you eat. If blood sugar rises too high (greater than 160 mg/dL ), sugar sticks irreversibly to the outer membranes of cells. The sugar is then converted eventually to sorbitol that destroys the cells. This is what causes all of the side effects of diabetes: blindness, deafness, dementia, heart attacks, kidney failure, nerve damage, premature death and so forth.

How Exercise Controls Blood Sugar
Resting muscles draw no sugar from the bloodstream. However, contracting muscles can draw sugar rapidly from the bloodstream without even needing insulin (J Appl Physiol, 2005;99: 338-343 & 2005;8750-7587). This effect lasts maximally during exercise and up to an hour after you finish intense exercise, and tapers off completely around 17 hours after you have finished exercising (Am J Clin Nutr, 2008(July);88(1):51-57. Thus the most healthful eating pattern is to have your main meal mid-day, then have a light supper that is low in foods that cause a high rise in blood sugar.

Eat Fish, Not Fish Oil Pills

North Americans spent more than $1.2 billion last year for fish oil pills. A testing company called LabDoor found that, of 30 brands of fish oil pills, six contained less than 30 percent of what the labels claimed. At least a dozen brands contained lower levels of the most potent fish oils that are claimed to help prevent heart attacks and dementia. LabDoor did not find significant levels of heavy metals, such as mercury, in any of the fish oil products.

No Government Agency to Protect You
This report shows that some companies manufacture fish oil pills that do not contain what they claim on their labels. It is an even greater concern that an act passed by the U.S Congress in 1994 prevents the Food and Drug Administration or any other government agency from requiring companies to prove that their pills contain the ingredients claimed on the labels.

Eating Fish May Help to Prevent Heart Attacks
Many studies show that eating fish twice a week is associated with a reduction in heart attacks. Studies have failed to show that eating fish more often than twice a week offers further protection against heart attacks. Fish oil pills are a different story. Some studies show that fish oil pills help prevent heart attacks, but a large meta-analysis of well-controlled clinical trials shows that fish oil pills do not appear to help people with a history of heart disease (Arch Intern Med. May 14, 2012;172(9):686-694). Also some trials have shown an increased risk for prostate cancer in people taking large amounts of fish oils.

What Does this Mean for You?
People who get adequate amounts of omega-3 fatty acids suffer fewer heart attacks. Eating fish twice a week is associated with reduced risk for heart attacks. You can also meet your needs for omega-3s by eating whole grains, seeds, beans and nuts. The omega-3s in plants are less potent than those in fish, but your body converts more than five percent of the short chain omega-3s in plants to the type of long chain omega-3s found in fish. It is controversial whether fish oil pills offer the same health benefits.

Eating Meat Associated with Increased Risk for Diabetes

Many previous studies have associated eating red meat with increased risk for diabetes. Now a prospective study of 41,000 men and women in the United States and Canada who were not diabetics shows that after two years, meat eaters are more than four times more likely to develop diabetes than those who do not eat meat (Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases, 2013;23:292-299). The probable explanation is that saturated fat in red meat blocks insulin receptors to make cells less able to respond to insulin.

John von Neumann, Father of the Computer Revolution

John von Neumann made major discoveries in more different fields of mathematics than any other mathematician in the history of the world. During World War II, he was the person most responsible for triggering the atom bomb. After WW II, he started the whole computer revolution and his breakthroughs led to the construction of the first stored-program computer. He worked with Allan Turing to make modern computers more efficient in storing programs and data. He was one of the first people to use computers to solve problems with complex mathematical equations. He used computers to help build the hydrogen bomb. He established Game Theory, developed computer games, defined ordinal numbers mathematically, was one of the first to explain quantum mechanics, and developed what is known as Minimax Theory. He was in charge of the world's first numerical weather forecasts on his ENIAC computer. His mathematical analysis of the structure of self-replication was directly responsible for the discovery of the structure of DNA.

He had such an incredible photographic memory and could solve problems in his head and at such dazzling speed that Nobel Laureate Hans Bethe said: "I have sometimes wondered whether a brain like von Neumann's does not indicate a species superior to that of man". During the building of the atom bomb, other scientists in the Manhattan Project joked that the Hungarians (von Neumann, Edward Teller, Leo Szilárd, John Kemény and others) were so smart that they must be Martians and they were speaking Hungarian as a cover.

Incredible Parents
Von Neumann was born in 1903 to wealthy Hungarian Jewish parents. His father, Max Neumann, must have been an extraordinary individual because he moved from the Jewish community in Pecs to the cosmopolitan city of Budapest where he obtained a doctorate of laws degree and became a banker. In 1913, he was made a member of the nobility for his service to the Austro-Hungarian empire by Emperor Franz Josef, and the family name eventually was changed from Neumann to von Neumann. Some reports say that he bought his nobility. Read more
