[Diabetes-talk] Testing 8 Times a Day?

Type 2s usually do not have to test more than 4 times a day. But type 1s
need to test more than that. Usually 5 times a day is the lowest amount
recommended for type 1s, but more is encouraged.
But if you only test once or twice a day, how do you know what glucose
levels are running throughout the day? How do you know how meals are
affecting glucose levels? How do you know how activity affects them? Just
because you wake up at a certain number does not mean that is what is
happening throughout the day. Glucose levels can rise and/or fall in the
course of a day, especially where meals are considered, and without testing,
you don't know what your numbers are or the best course of action. For
insulin dependent diabetics, these are crucial.

I feel very fortunate that I can test once a day, and my glucose levels have
been quite good lately, around 109 and 110. But most people I know with
diabetes test at least twice a day, some more often than that.

I test 6 to 8 times a day myself. One thing we know for sure with diabetes
is the more you test, the better control you can have over glucose levels.
Especially if you eat frequently or exercise, testing 8 times a day is not
unusual. And if having trouble controlling glucose levels, a doctor may want
you to test more frequently so they can better track trends and create a
fuller composite of what is happening throughout a day with your sugars.

Hi Lissi, and All,
Glad to have you back on the list. I'm glad to be back and getting involved
again, too. As for your doc telling you to test 8 times a day, I'm not sure
what to say to that except, "Is it wrong to want to tap your doctor upside
his noggin?"
Sheesh. I wonder if he had to, would he honestly do it 8 times a day
himself, y'know? Eight times?
Bah humbug to that. It took me years to accept and comply with 4-5 tims a
day. Of course, such stubbornness is at least part of the reason I'm blind,
too. Live and learn, live and learn.
Usually the hard way, though. ;-)
Strive On Indeed, Lissi, Strive On!

I rejoined the list because I need help myself.
For example, when it comes
to talking glucometers I know nothing!!! I heard they aren't making them
anymore. And I'm seeing an endocrinologist for the first time. To comply
with his recommendations I should be sticking myself 8 times a day and so
far I've only managed to get it right one day. I don't like thinking about
it, much less doing it. I have such a long way to go!
I like your, "Strive on." I'm still striving to do my morning glucose check
and it's past noon.
Always with love,
Lissi
