[Diabetes-Talk] Diabetes-Talk Digest, Vol 113, Issue 1

Erica,

Are you type 1? Stick to a low-carb diet, eating bread and potatoes and food
with refined sugar sparingly. Exercise when you can, doing what you can.
Aerobic activity helps a lot to lower A1-Cs. It can take baby steps, so
don't stress. Just stick to your plan and take those strides.

Bridgit

Hello all on list. My name is Erica. I am new on the list. Thought I can get
some help from the list. I am working on lowing my sugars. My last a1c was
9-6. I am on insulin. And I have diabetes plus gout and stomach acid. As
well as kidney problems. I am working on cutting down on potatoes and white
bread for now. Any tips on how to lower the sugars. I don't want to change
my insulin for now. It has been over the nine about the last four years. So
any help will be grate. And no on going on a pump for now. Doctor was going
to look in too it for me. So thanks again Erica.

Thanks. Baby doing well. Still requires oxygen, but on regular canula now
and not Pap mask. Also, in the last couple of days, he no longer needs photo
therapy and is now in a regular crib in the NICU, so we can pick him up and
hold him whenever we want. He's also off IV fluids, and in fact, his IV was
completely removed. Hopefully these improvements continue and we can bring
him home sooner rather than later.

Bridgit, You totally rock! Best wishes to you, Daddy and Declan on the birth
of the new tiny one.

What a great size for a baby, and he?ll do great! I had one six weeks early
nearly 43 years ago, he weighed 4 pounds 14 ounces, and now he?s full-grown
and great!

Blessings to you all!

Between 5 and 6 is fantastic, particularly for type 2's. 7 and lower is
acceptable, especially for type 1's. You also need to take into
consideration over-all health, and keeping BG's stable in general. A1-C's
show what BG's have been running for the past 3 months

Hi,
I myself am in the same boat as you. I'm on orel meds and on insulin too.
An A1C target, I was told, was around 6.0 or 5.0, but maybe I have the
number's wrong. For better results, insure you ask your doctor what A1C
target he or she wants you at.

Hi Bridget!

That depends on you and doctor.
You are doing well and this is good.
If you want to go to six that is fine just make sure your number are
not too low.
Eat that wonderful oatmeal.
That will help.

That depends on you and doctor.
You are doing well and this is good.
If you want to go to six that is fine just make sure your number are not to
low.
Eat that wonderful oatmeal.
That will help.

Thanks dan, I will do that. I have my next appointment with him in 2 weeks
to do a follow up. So I will ask then. The a1c that I reported from the
past 2 weeks was from my primary doctor and not my endo so I will ask my
endo who would be more on top of things instead of my general primary
doctor.

Gee that is pretty good, remember you want a life as well, not just
exercising.
I have a friend who is so over whelmed over exercising, that is all she
knows.
I want a life to do other things than just exercise.
I am washing today going up and down stairs, that is enough for me today.
I don't plan to knock myself out over not working on the tread mill.
Wishing you the best.

The issues is that love ones think that I am not doing enough when I know I
am doing as much as I can to keep my numbers in check. Its not that easy
when someone is not in your shooes and keeps on telling you to do x or y.
when they have no idea how hard it is. There days that I give up and say
why in the hell am I doing this and then there are other days that I get up
and fight know that there is another day coming for a bbetter number when
I check with my meter and confirm with my dexcom cgm.

Agree I do have a life , have my small practice but I manage that time so
that I wont have to worry about complications later in life as I am in my
mid 40's and want to live a long life as long as I can with the death
wish that I have been delt diabetes.

Some days we will miss, that's just a fact. And going up and down a flight
of stairs several times a day is good exercise built into your routine,
alright!

Hi everyone!
I just found out that my insurance company denied coverage for the Animas
pump. Oops! This is what's wrong when the patient isn't involved in filling
out any of the forms. I had tried to get the Vibe and I'm pretty sure that
they denied the coverage because of the Dexcom half of the pump, which I
wouldn't need. Hahahaha, you fools, I already have it. But my endo couldn't
lift a little finger and say on the forms that I had the Dexcom and wanted
this pump because it was more useable by me. I can actually kind of do a
correction bolus on the Vibe, but definitely not on the Ping. And forms
being returned numerous times drew the process out so that I now have only a
couple of cartridges left. Yikes! My endo told me just to go off the pump.
Yeah right! So now I'm trying to get supplies for my Cozmo and hope that my
50 dollar E-bay wonder hangs in there for awhile. I was really hoping to do
the pump switch now, rather than in a couple of months when I'm scheduled
for a surgery that will mess up my life style for quite awhile. And later
this week I'm supposed to get a steroid injection which means I'll go
through my last couple of cartridges faster too.
Of course, were I sighted none of this would be going on because this isn't
the pump I'd be getting. Anyway, I know there isn't anything any of you can
do but I appreciate you letting me rant a bit in the hope that I might get
another idea. But it's multiple factors here. Insurance companies are, well,
who they are. Doctors are in a hurry and just fill out forms without
attention to the person they affect.
And the other stupid thing, ummm, ahem, this one was mine! Two weeks ago I
traveled and took my backup pens with me. I accidentally left them in the
hotel refrigerator. And when I called the hotel, nothing. Oops! So boy am I
stuck for now. Let the fun begin. Sheesh!

Hi Veronica,

The Animas Ping and the Animas Vibe are essentially the same in terms of
giving a bolus as a blind person. I used the Animas Ping for almost a decade
prior to getting the Vibe. Now, I didn't use the blood glucose meter that
came with the Ping, but that did not keep me from using the Ping itself to
give myself boluses. .

When I switched from the Ping to the Vibe six months ago, I literally had
nothing new to learn. So, if the Ping gets approved by your insurance and
the Vibe won't, I would go that direction. The Animas Ping works 100% the
same as the Vibe for me as a totally blind pumper.

Hope this helps.

Tom

Veronica,

I'm so sorry to hear this. I think you should appeal this decision,
since it is the only pump that is the most accessible for the blind. After
18 years of using Accucheck pumps, I was forced to find another pump when
Roche decided to stop distributing their pumps in the U.S. After visiting
with my diabetic educator, playing with the three available pumps and
finding the Diabetes Talk site to ask other diabetics who are blind, I came
to the conclusion that the Vibe was the best option. I also use a Dexcom,
but I don't have it paired with the pump. I like using the iPhone Share app
that allows me to know what my blood sugar is. Pairing it with the Vibe
would be useless for me and would mean that I would have to input blood
sugars in to both the Dexcom and pump to calibrate it twice a day. I'm
lucky that my kids are accessible every morning and night to put a blood
sugar in to the Dexcom, and I didn't find a need to also use the pump for a
receiver. My insurance company did not have any issues with me getting a
new pump, since my Spirit pump's warranty had expired a year ago. I did
have to provide a month's worth of blood sugars showing that I tested at
least four times aday. Isn't that crazy? Anyway, I sure hope you can
appeal and argue your case for the Vibe. It really is a shame that
insurance would keep you from obtaining the only pump that a blind person
can use with limited sighted assistance. I'm just two weeks in to using my
Vibe, and I'm still struggling to learn how to do what I used to do so
easily on my Spirit. I am fortunate to have two teenagers living with me to
help me when it doesn't do what I wanted it to do. But, I can easily give
myself a bolus using the audible bolus feature. Even though the Vibe
doesn't have audible beeps to let me know that I've depressed a button, the
buttons do make a slight click sound once you press them. So, that part is
nice. It is just learning how to blindly navigate a whole new set of menus.

Good luck, and please consider appealing the decision. You shouldn't have
to go back to injections after being on a pump.

				Jamie

No, they are not the same. The correction bolus is very different and that
is important to me. I sat here in my house in December and worked with both
pumps. To give a correction bolus on the Ping, you enter your BG manually,
then the pump shows how much insulin it thinks you need. At that point you
have to hit the up-arrow key till the number on the display matches.
Obviously this is out for us. On the Vibe, you enter your BG reading, the
pump shows what it thinks you need, just as in the Ping. But when you hit
the up-arrow, it now selects that amount. So we still can't read the amount
but we can use the feature if we so choose. And since I so choose, that's a
big difference for me. And it's ridiculous to not have what I want because
everyone else was in too big of a hurry to go to bat for me. Not to mention,
having to fight for a pump I don't really want in the first place. <grin>
But no matter what I do, it now has to go through appeals which are not
fast. So we'll see what happens. Guess I'm just stubborn and I think I'm
worth it. <grin>
Stay tuned!
Veronica

I have been a diabetic for 47 years and have learned how to live with
diabetes and not let it run my life. With all of the latest technology and
ways to manage diabetes, it is not a death sentence. I, personally look at
it as a healthy way of living. There are a lot worse conditions that people
are living with than diabetes. I'm sorry to hear that others are
criticizing your efforts to maintain good blood sugar control. You are
doing your best, have a pump and Dexcom and hopefully following your diet
and exercising. I'll tell you what I did to really help keep my blood
sugars in a good range. I changed the high alert from 240 to 180. By the
time I am 240, I feel awful, so I lowered when it tells me that I am high.

Take care!

Veronica,
My mistake to assume you used the pump the same way I do. I only ever use
the audio bolus function. Sorry about that. Good luck.

Guess I'm just stubborn and I think I'm
worth it. <grin> Stay tuned!

Tom

Sheesh!

Jamie,
Keep working on it, you will eventually get used to the new Vibe menus too,
I'm sure.
Quick question, are you using the Dexcom 4G or the 5G? I'm using the 5G and
can calibrate my Dexcom twice a day right through the Dexcom G5 Mobile app
on my iPhone.

				Jamie

I'm using the G4, since that is all that was available almost three years
ago. That is a great feature to be able to calibrate it on the phone. I
try to do everything I can independently, so I need to check in to upgrading
to the G5.

Thanks for the words of encouragement for the pump! I know it is just a
matter of learning the sequences, and my 51 year old memory isn't as quick
to learn new things!

easily on my Spirit.

Sheesh!

Oh Jamie, I would highly recommend upgrading to the G5 mobile. I am
completely independent with mine although sometimes I do still screw up the
tape. <grin>
If I end up with the Vibe, the toughest thing I ran into was pushing those
arrow keys just at the right amount of force and speed. While the click is
definitely audible, sometimes one click can jump you several things. That's
where my practice will definitely be, well, that and memorizing new stuff.
Not quite as tricky as the OmniPod though, where sometimes the confirm is
the right soft key and sometimes it's the middle and all sorts of fun stuff.

But that's the really weird thing about my insurance. My pump has been out
of warranty since 2009. Hello? At least I know I have the skills, desire and
persistence to advocate for myself. On one level, I want to just be lazy but
at that core level, you bet I'll go after it.
But here's a question for all of you. Sometimes I'm not the best at
advocating for something without it exacting quite a toll on me. I see many
life-long advocates who seem to have the passion but also to have a certain
detachment so they aren't so beat up in the process. Does that make sense?
I've done what I can this morning and won't know anything till at least the
end of the week. So I need to get on with my life, conserve cartridges and
hope for the best. Really? I'm really good at having fantasy discussions
with people in my head and trying to change the outcome just by thinking it.
<grin> Kind of hard on the sleep though. <grin>
Jamie, they may not have given you an argument because you had the same
version of the Dexcom. In my case, since it's a new insurance, I'm not sure
that anyone told them I had the Dexcom at all.
Anyway, thanks for weighing in, all of you. I'll let you know what happens.
In the meantime, oh please, hang in there, Klaus. That's my pump's name.
<grin>

I'm using the G4, since that is all that was available almost three years
ago. That is a great feature to be able to calibrate it on the phone. I
try to do everything I can independently, so I need to check in to upgrading
to the G5.

Thanks for the words of encouragement for the pump! I know it is just a

Jamie,
Keep working on it, you will eventually get used to the new Vibe menus too,
I'm sure.
Quick question, are you using the Dexcom 4G or the 5G? I'm using the 5G and
can calibrate my Dexcom twice a day right through the Dexcom G5 Mobile app
on my iPhone.

Daily activity is good for anyone. But it's cardio that will truly affect
blood sugars. You don't have to be a slave to exercise to accomplish this
goal. You need your heart rate to a certain level to accomplish cardio
exercise. Even just exercising 30 minuts 3 times a week can make a big
difference. You don't have to be a gym rat to be healthy and get good
exercise in.

F them, grin. Like they even know anything about diabetes unless one
themselves or a doctor. Otherwise, I wouldn't pay it much mind.

Rant away, dear. We all need to at times, smile. This is frustrating stuff
for anyone, then add in being blind, it can make things more frustrating
because of the lack of accessibility. Hang in there.

I just spoke with a doctor that said Medicare will now approve CGMs for
certain cases. That's progress if this is true.

Sheesh!

Weirdly, I found a community of people on Facebook who have been on the
pump, many for years, and hate it and go back on injections. Soe it is just
a temporary thing, but for some, it is permenant. I was so surprised by this
because I love being on a pump, and I've been on one for 13 years now. I
would hate to go back to injections.

				Jamie

I think G is like me and does corrections with a sliding scale using the
touch bolus. Even with my cosmo, I never used the bolus or correction
wizard. Using the touch bolus has worked fine for both scenarios. But if you
prefer a certain feature, you should have the necessary pump that works for
you and fits your needs.

Guess I'm just stubborn and I think I'm
worth it. <grin> Stay tuned!

Tom

couple of cartridges left.
Sheesh!

Veronica,
My mistake to assume you used the pump the same way I do. I only ever use
the audio bolus function. Sorry about that. Good luck.
Tom

Guess I'm just stubborn and I think I'm
worth it. <grin> Stay tuned!

Tom
