[Diabetes-Talk] Using Animas pumps

Jamie,

I've been using the Amimas Ping for about 4 years now. I had been on the
Cosmo prior to this. I feel the Animas is comparable, and I've not had major
problems using it. I wrote an article in the June 2016 Braille Monitor about
my experience with the Amimas you might find helpful. If you have further
questions, feel free to ask at any time.

My husband is also blind, and my children much to young to help, so I
primarily operate and adjust my pump on my own. I do have assistance with
adjusting basal rates when need be, but otherwise, I do what I can with the
pump on my own.

The Animas sadly does not beep for every function, but in 4 years, this has
never been a problem for me. I've never pressed a button and had it not do
the function I intend.

Even with my Cosmo, I have never used the feature where you in-put blood
sugars into the pump; I have always carb-counted in my head and used the
touch bolus, so I can't speak to the bolus wizard on any pump, but I can
look at it and get back to you on how accessible it is.

Please, ask any other questions you have.

Bridgit

Subject: [Diabetes-Talk] Using Animas pumps

Hi! I am new to Diabetes Talk, and I am searching for anyone who is willing
to share how they use the Animas Ping or Vibe as a blind individual. I am
totally blind and have been successfully using an insulin pump for 18 years.
I started with Disetronic's H-tron and am presently using Roche's Accucheck
Spirit and a Dexcom G5. I have stuck with the Accucheck pumps, because they
were the only ones with audible beeps to navigate through the menus.
Unfortunately, Roche is no longer selling any of their pumps, and my Spirit
has less than a month to go before shutting down. So, I visited with my
Diabetes Educator and found the Animas pumps to be the best possible pump to
replace the Spirit. I am going to continue to use my Dexcom G5, since I
cannot read the pump to know what the blood sugar is showing, so why switch
to the G4. I can use the G5 with my iPhone app and know what the rreading
is. Of course, I need one of my kids to help with inputting blood sugars
and stopping and starting the Dexcom, but I need a CGM due to not being able
to detect my lows. So, I plan to order the Vibe tomorrow, even though I am
so nervous about how I am going to manage using it as independently as I use
the Spirit. If anyone uses the Ping or Vibe, would you be willing to
contact me to let me know how you manage using it? Thanks!

                                                                Jamie
