Hi Amy,
Yes, the "Prodigy Voice Meter" is the only meter sold in the States that is fully accessible for someone who is blind. It is up to your Doctor to write stating that you are blind and the Embrace is only good if you have someone sighted in your home at all times when you test to help. The Embrace will give you the result only once but, no way to program the meter once you receive it!
The Prodigy Auto Code Meter will give you the result audible only once and no way to set up or double check the result. That is why your Doctor needs to state "Prodigy Voice Meter" is the only meter he or she wants you to use!
The meter is the same cost through Amazon or the NFB Materials Center. The NFB Materials Center only carries the "Prodigy Voice Meter" while Amazon sells many others. So, double check with Amazon to make sure you are ordering the Prodigy Voice Meter".
You may use the Prodigy Auto Code strips to test with and that is the big expense for you. Your insurance company should not have a problem to covering the cost of the strips. As long as your Doctor writes it up that way in the beginning.
Warmly, Joy

Amy,
I think you mean the “Embrace” which is a cheap glucose monitor some of the Diabetic supply companies try to push on us. It does not have “full” accessibility. You should ask for the Prodigey Voice since it is now the only fully accessible talking glucose meter for diabetics who are blind.

Hello,
I have been recently diagnosed and am in search of the best glucose monitor for a totally blind person. I have heard that the Prodigy is the best but my insurance carrier providers do not carry it. The only option that is offered is the Brace, which I have never heard of.
I know I can order from Amazon and will if the Prodigy is the best.
Thanks.
