[Diabetes-Talk] CGM question

No, while some pumps are incorporating CGMs, they can also be used
separately. Dexcom is its own device. There's a transmitor and sensors that
you wear on your tummy.

With the Dexcom G5, you still have to test a couple of times a day. With the
Dexcom G6, I believe you test only once. Otherwise, the CGM test every
couple of minutes for you.

For blind diabetics, the transmitor is completely inaccessible, but, if
using the Dexcom app, it is accessible.

The point of CGMs are not so much to cut down on finger poking, though they
do, but, to help show what sugars do in real-time, and to alert when
dropping to low or going up too high. Because of this, many people using
CGMs find it helps to lower A1-Cs because they can more accurately track
glucose levels, especially after meals.

Subject: [Diabetes-Talk] CGM question

Hi All,
I tend to be a lurker, but read some of what bounces around on the list.
So, I've been paying attention to the most recent discussions about the
Dexcom, and wishing I didn't have to poke my fingwith twice a day and rely
on something that can be off. My question is do you have to have an insulin
pump to be using a CGM? My current readings from my meter are pretty
controlled, and with my work on weight loss, I've been going down on
insulin. But to me, it makes more sense to have a system that is reliable
and not off. I'll be seeing my endo in September and am wondering if it's
even worth it to bring up the topic with him or not. Thanks so much.
Warmly,
Doula
