Joyce,

Ah, gotcha. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 4 in the mid 80s but
did not became blind until my mid 20s in 2005, so by then, talking meters
were definitely a thing. Sadly, still waiting on the talking pump.

No, I am talking about an insulin pump not a glucose meter. It was one of
the first insulin pumps. I guess Yale was testing them out. I don't
remember who made it, but it did have a basic drip and I had to bolis for
meals. This was way before I went on multiple injections of a long acting
insulin and coverage for meals. I was not blind at that time. Thinking
back it had to be closer to 40 years ago.

I do remember getting the talking blood glucose machine.

Do you mean before talking meters came out? Because I've been diabetic for
33 years, and I always had a meter, and there have been glucameters long
before then.

I had a chance to receive an insulin pump more than 30 years ago. I was in
a study up at Yale having to do with my sight. I was on the team that
didn't use the pump, but when we finishe the study we were offered to try
the pump.

I don't remember the sensors, but the pump was the size of a VHS tape around
6" by 9" by 3". It beep every time it administered insulin. I remember
going to a concert wearing it and when I got the pat down to go in they
pulled me out of line and asked a lot of questions.

I used it for maybe 3 months, but my kids were young and I had too many
insulin reactions and this was before blood glucose machines came out.

The one I have now is far advanced and much easier than back then. All we
need is to get the pump companies to make it accessible for us blind folks.

Joyce
