[Diabetes-Talk] pumpless

This whole category of being put into the adult disabled child category
makes it all complicated, and it is what allowed me to get both, but I can't
explain the actual particulars more than I have.

My understanding has always been that for SSDI, you have worked so much and
paid taxes into the system. But if your income is below a certain point and
you're disabled, you qualify for SSI. But this I just a baseline
understanding. Just because you qualify for SSI doesn't mean you also
qualify for SSDI

Bridgit, As I understand it, no. In the states where I have lived you only
got SSI either if your social security was low enough to put you under a
certain poverty level, or if you didn't qualify for any social security for
whatever reasons. I don't remember the logistics, but I do remember that I
didn't at one point get enough social security, didn't have a job, and I got
SSI. It's tricky because the rules for both programs are different, and if
you end up qualifying for both you can end up in over-payment city and have
to pay back many dollars. I do not know whether all blind people can
potentially qualify for SSI or all the rules that qualify any of us.

Janette,

No, not at all challenging any of this. Just trying to better understand
something I've never heard of. I understand that to qualify for SSDI, one
has to have worked a certain amount. But don't disabled adults regardless
qualify for SSI? I know several blind people on SSI who have not worked
enough for SSDI but still qualify for SSI.

Bridgit, it is my understanding that if you qualify under your mother's or
father's the likelihood is that you don't have enough quarters to qualify
under your own. At least that was how it was with SSDI and until I worked I
did have Medicare. Once I had accumulated enough quarters of my own I never
qualified under anyone else's.
Had I not been in that situation I would not have known either, and when I
had this it was quite a number of years ago. I don't know what the most
current program of this kind is, but I do know that many people working in
SSDI and SSA don't recommend the program. When I got in, it was because our
insurance agent knew about it and recommended we check it out. And, for the
record, had I not been on such a program I would have assumed Dar misspoke
as well. Since you are always careful to present accurate information, I for
one didn't think you were challenging or speaking out of turn. I appreciate
your knowledge and value what you have contributed to the list.

I'm not debating anything with anyone. I only thought perhaps Dar misspoke.
However, I did ask my husband who worked for a decade helping people apply
for and understand guidelines of Medicare, among many other things, was not
aware an adult child could qualify for a parent's Medicare. Not that he
knows everything by any means. Regardless, glad there are programs available
for people who need them.

However, question, if you're disabled, don't you qualify for your own
Medicare? Why provide Medicare under parental coverage when you can qualify
for Medicare yourself? Are we speaking of Medicare or Medicaid?

Bridgit, if she was signed up as an adult disabled child she can get it
under her mother's Medicare. I only know this because when I was a child my
father died and my family was advised to sign me up as an adult disabled
child before I turned 18 so that my family and I would not lose my social
security disability. I did eventually land on my feet, having a good working
career and earned my own social security, but I know Dar is right. The real
question is, is she getting the support she needs so she can work if a job
becomes possible for her, and can she get on her own disability. But that is
for the rehab people to help her sort out.

Dar,

What do you mean your "mother's Medicare" didn't go through? It has to be
your own Medicare

Also, it's insulin pen(P E N) not pin (P I N) smile.
