[Diabetes-Talk] Accessibility of tandem pump

I can tell you that the Tandem app definitely does not work with VoiceOver. I also agree that changing the cartridge is quite challenging, even for people with sight. I do know some people who left the Tandem and switched to the Omnipod for just that reason. What's weird is that several years ago, they did include deaf and hard of hearing people in their regular focus groups. They are the only company who actually lowered the pitch of the beeps so everyone can truly hear them. But two years ago, they let me bring a pump home and play with it, mostly to see if we could make some sort of template which would guide us using the pump. We did not succeed as every screen was different, had different numbers of icons in different positions. One of the things I did try to bring up at the task force for nothing was that we needed to get our noses in there so that as they did create an app to control the pump, they didn't model it after their current apps and leave us out again. But the NFB didn't seem to care. But we sure could have been a couple of years into this if they had. It's a great pump and I might have chosen it, had I been sighted. Besides, I could have kept using my Cleo's. In my opinion, that's the best and easiest to insert cannula I've ever met.. I do miss that.
But it's really good that each of us make noise whenever we find the opportunity. Thanks Patricia.

Thanks for this information, Patricia! I downloaded the Tandem app, and it was all graphics. Therefore, voiceover did not read anything on it. Unless they have improved it since I checked it out a couple of years ago, I don’t think it is accessible to us yet. Hopefully, the people that you spoke to who seemed sincere about making their pump work for us are telling you the truth! My doctor would love to see me use the Tandem. My diabetic educator tells me though that the cartridge is Very challenging to change compared to all other pumps. I am glad that you had the opportunity to talk with people though.
