[Diabetes-Talk] Are Blood Glucose Meters Accurate? New Data on 18 Meters | diaTribe

in December I had blood drawn at my GP's office and my a1c was 6.7. A couple
of weeks ago my insurance company sent a nurse for a home visit .She had
some kind of meter for the a1c and she said it was 5.3. I know that is way
off. She did say the meters were not as accurate as when the blood is drawn.
I couldn't believe it would be that far off.

Veronica,
You hit the nail on the head. Those are my exact thoughts. When I get
various blood sugar values from meters saying anywhere from a blood sugar of
70- 120 it’s very frustrating to decide what to do. I do cherish being able
to at least know approximately where my blood sugar is but as far as letting
a pump rely on this information to adjust insulin is a bit scary. My last
Dexcom sensor read 70 after the two hour warm-up and three fingersticks at
the same time showed 126, 139, 140. I did calibrate at 140 and did several
fingersticks for the next eight hours to make sure.
