Veronica, no I’m not really a pizza eater but my birthday was last Wednesday and got together with friends. We had a variety of Chinese takeout items for which I estimated my best on the carbs and my very favorite chocolate cheesecake for dessert. I took my estimated amount of insulin at the beginning of the main course and when I saw it rising up a bit I believe it was 150 or 160 a while later I took another small amount of insulin which brought it right back down again. An hour later we had the cheesecake and my blood sugar stayed very steady with the amount of insulin I took. The cheesecake actually was commercial and had the carbs on the container so I could get an accurate bolus. It was great Because of vision of course I can’t set an extended bolus on my pump so sometimes when eating a high fat meal which is very unusual for me I’d do you get some highs 4 to 6 hours after eating and need a correction.
I have noticed that when doing corrections with this insulin it does not always seem to work rapidly when I’ve got one of those really stubborn highs as a result of a low. at those times I sometimes have to do repeated corrections but because of the speed of this insulin I can do corrections on an hourly basis without worrying about stacking insulin.
Unfortunately, this insulin is not yet approved in pumps from FTA so I have to get it through my part D Medicare prescription and it is a tear four non-formulary item and is very expensive. Plus I will be in the coverage gap very soon because it is such an expensive drug. now that I am pretty sure I want to stay with this insulin I need to talk to my insurance agent about comparing other part D insurance plans.
Patricia

> Patricia, I don't do it myself, but I know three people who spray Flonase on the site before inserting the cannula. However, it's for irritation from the tape, not the insulin itself. Since the insulin goes in, not so sure. But hey, it's an easy thing to try. Which insulin are you using exactly?

It is working amazingly well for me as the insulin peaks very rapidly after the meal matching up exactly when my food peaks the blood sugar so that I rarely get much of a rise in blood sugar after eating. However I have one of the side effects listed in the literature and that is a lot of irritation of the skin and tissue around the cannula. It gets quite inflamed so apparently I have a bit of an allergy to this insulin. Don’t want to stop taking it however as it works very well. I have heard in the past from other folks that they will spray the skin with an anti-histamine such as Flonase prior to inserting the needle and this perhaps can prevent the skin and tissue irritation. Does anyone have experience with this and could suggest a product? i’m seeing my Endo in a couple of weeks but thought I might get a Headstart on a solution if possible.
