[Diabetes-Talk] I can now take an insulin bolus directly from my iPhone after updating my tandem insulin pump and it’s fully accessible using voiceover

Hi Veronica,

I give Insulet a lot of credit for wanting to make the OmniPod accessible and I hope they do it. My only issue is I'm not crazy about the shape of the pod and I'd be very self-conscious about having that little bump sticking out. That's just me of course. If they ever really do come out with an accessible pump I'd have to give it serious consideration. At least for now my Medtronic pump is still working even though it doesn't give me or my doctor the features that would make us both happy.

The most important thing we also need is to be able to go into settings, set up the pumps ourselves, change our basal rates, set up temporary basals, and as has already been mentioned, changing the cartridge. But this is great progress. I can't do initial setup on the Omnipod either. I definitely have to use the Seeing AI app to read the screen, once things are up and running and there are places where I can't be sure that I have selected the right thing, like resetting the time. But Insulet is working on Iphone control as well. I still hate being so far behind in terms of pump access but I am happy we're moving in the right direction. And I'll continue to play in that gray zone. <grin.> Veronica

I, too, I am terribly, terribly sorry about this terrible fire!! What a travesty!! And it seems these things always happen in the middle of the night!! Again, I am so sorry!! The other hand, about the tandem pump and the iPhone, this is great news! However, yes. There is a however. And that is, I am with Jamie and this one. Until there is a way to access everything, fill cartridges, everything else there is, including turning the pump inside out, I won’t switch to it unless or until it is completely and fully accessible. Years ago, I had a conversation with my husband that went similar to this. when I asked about the accessibility of a given pump, he said, “ H honey, until there’s a pump out there that is completely and fully accessible, as your husband, I won’t even consider letting you use it. I want you to be able to maintain your independence as you always have.“

Yes, everyone got out of their houses safely due to a young neighbor who happen to be awake and saw the flames and the initial explosion and ran a block to wake all of us up. Those additional minutes may have saved lives and enabled enough time for my husband to get outside and start hosing down the side of our house to reduce the amount of flames that were able to take hold. Only a Only a small amount of the siding caught fire, some windows shattered from the heat, the fence burned down, our wood pile burned up and gas and electric utility boxes damaged. But the main thing is we are safe. Now life must go on.
> So, just wanted to share that I’m having a similar experience to Liz Oleksa and being able to take an insulin bolus from my phone. All of the regular bolus features including calculating dose from carbs, calculating needed corrections, accounting for insulin on board are available through the app except for the extended bolus feature. I have only had one meal since getting it up and running but everything worked great. Need to practice with it a bit more so it becomes second nature but everything seems to read aloud.
> The main thing that I think we have to learn from this is that all of the pump features should be able to be made accessible in this manner and if it can be done on the insulin pump it certainly can be done on other medical devices. So no medical device manufacturer has an excuse that it cannot be done. We have very solid proof that it can and has been done.
> I think that in the near rather than distant future we Will be looking back at this landmark event as the beginning of an explosion of accessibility for blind and low vision users of insulin pumps and hopefully other medical devices.
