[Dtb-talk] A Baffling Problem

Thanks, Mike. I downloaded some of the books again and they work fine now.
But, before I could get them all back, I reached my 30-books-in-30-days
limit. Should have waited for your message. Thanks so much.

Try checking the downloaded books (they're zip files) with Winzip, Winrar or
one of the other programs that unzips files -- Windows unzip won't do the
trick here. What you want to know is whether the files have been completely
downloaded, i.e., whether the zipfiles are complete and will uncompress
correctly. It is my understanding that NLS had a problem about a month ago
wherein books weren't completely downloaded and therefore didn't install
properly. In fact, it corrupted the bookmarks and place-holders for the
books so that one had to do a complete profile reset, thus losing all your
bookmarks. Apparently the current version of the Stream Companion software
didn't check the integrity of the zip files; I'm told the new version will
do so. In the meantime, you might want to manually check the integrity of
the zip files. I use the MSDOS version of the Info-zip groups unzip software
to check zip file integrity but many other unzip utilities should work.

If after this you still don't have luck, you might want to do the
seven-second-reset on the Stream to see if this helps. If it doesn't, I'd
write to both NLS and Humanware about the problem.

NLS has been doing some site maintenance lately so perhaps they've found
another probem. I must admit that it never publicized the problem; they were
remiss in not doing so, I think.

Subject: [Dtb-talk] A Baffling Problem

I have downloaded several books recently from the digital talking book
site.
There are several downloaded at different times. Last night, using the
Stream companion software, I installed the books on my Stream. When I
opened many of them, I received the message that I was not authorized to
read the book. The Stream companion software stated that the books were
installed successfully. When they didn't work, I deleted them from my
stream and installed them again using the stream companion software and
have, again, received the same message. What is even more strange is
that
one of the books I downloaded, I chose by mistake as I had already just
read
it. Now, I am told I do not have the approval to read the book. If I
had
downloaded the books from the dtb site all on the same day, I could,
perhaps, understand the problem. But, I didn't. And, now, if I delete
them
all from my computer and go back to the site, those downloads will count
a
second time, thus, decreasing the number of new books I can download in
the
next 30 days. And, that doesn't seem quite right. Does anyone have any
ideas as to the probmems I might be having and what I should do about
them?
Thank you.
