[Electronics-talk] Unlocking Cell Phones

I haven't done it myself, but I'd suggest calling the AT&T customer
service number, telling them that you want to unlock your phone because
you're traveling and want to be able to use it with other international
carriers. they'll try to sell you their international plan, but just
tell them that's too expensive and you want the flexibility of using the
local service provider. Stick to your guns. I believe AT&T's policy is
that they'll unlock your phone if you've been a AT&T customer in good
standing for 3 months. They'll send you a code you can use to unlock
your phone. If you can't get through to the service representative
you're talking to, hang up and call back, and try again with a different
representative. It'll take them a few days. Like I said, I haven't done
this myself, but I've seen others talk about doing this on the web and
on mailing lists. Good luck.

I went to the A T and T store today and the customer service representative was no help to me at all. He said, "If the phone is used with A T and T, then it should not be unlocked." I said, "Can the phone be used with other services, because I have heard this is possible?"
