[Electronics-talk] Digital TV options for TV radios

For both digital TV and radio, the development of a portable unit is
dependent on the development of a chip set that is powerful enough to
handle the tasks, and low-powered enough to work in a portable
device. The first chip sets developed are always expensive and
high-powered. Until recently the whole digital TV signal had to be
decoded to extract the audio, driving up the cost and power
requirements. I understand that chip development is such that this
is no longer necessary, but don't know if the chips yet have low
enough power consumption to make a portable device possible. We will
get there, but it takes time and money.
