Hi, christie. Actually, apple -- and some blind users claim -- that the
design of the accssibility of the I-phone makes it possible to navigate the
screen. I haven't used one myself, so I'm going on reports and what I've
heard from a couple of friends. 
I have not heard mixed reviews of the 3rd-party software. I'd encourage you
to go to 
www.afb.org and check out their unbiased reviews of the various products for
making cellphones accessible.

Any idea if this will include access to text messaging?
I have put off buying the 3rd party software because it has such mixed
reviews so maybe I will just wait a little longer.
The idea that the I-phone is accessible when you turn on their speech is not
accurate.  Since it is a flat screen you have no clue where to touch it to
do what you want it to do!  Obviously it wasn't a blind user that helped
them test that feature!
