There are tsa approved locks, that TSA has the combo for, so they can get
in, is another consideration

Another consideration is that TSA does not want you to lock your
luggage.  They search bags randomly and if the bag is locked, they will
break the lock.

Good idea.  If you're going to pay for having your bags schlepped cross 
country it makes sense. There was a talk radio host out here in L.A. who

absolutely refused to check any kind of baggage on an airline, on the 
assumption that it would be lost. He always Fedexed his stuff to
wherever he 
was going. This had to be several years ago that I heard this; I would 
imagine that he saw the writing on the wall even back then, that
careless 
luggage handling would be the rule rather than the exception, and that 
airlines would make you pay for the privelege of entrusting your bags to

them and losing them in the process. Oh yeah, and don't even think about
the 
luggage handlers who rifle through people's bags and make off with any 
valuables.
