I know that style of oven you are talking about. Have you tried using one of 
the long handled butane grill lighters to light the pilot light? This way, 
you can find the appropriate position for the lighter with everything cold, 
line up the lighter, unlit, click the lighter, and then turn on the gas. 
This method is far safer, and more reliable than using a match.
