[Electronics-talk] Accessible Stove/oven

When i was a kid, I recall visiting my grandmother's home, and she had a
gas stove that had to be lit every time it was used. In our home, we
always had gas stoves, and they had a pilot light, which stayed lit all
the time, thus you didn't have to light the stove unless the pilot light
somehow blew out, or went out when the gas was shut off for some reason.
But I haven't seen a stove without either a gas igniter or pilot light
since the 1960's.

I don't believe that's correct. The starter on your oven and stove is
not electric like the newer ones though that's not the whole reason you
have to manually start it. I think your starter is just broken

As I said, it wouldn't matter if I could get a new oven installed
because it would still have a manually-ignited oven piot. Auto pilot
ovens require an electric starter, which means that you need an outlet
behind the oven to plug it in. Prewar apartment buildings lack such
outlets, and so ovens have to be all-gas. So even if my landlord
furnished a brand-new gas oven, I would still have to manually light its
pilot every time I wanted to use the oven section. Also, the pilot that
ignites the stove top burners, which is normally lit all the time,
occasionally goes out due to drafts from outside (the oven is right next
to the window), and when this happens, I have to get my super to come up
to my apartment and relight it for me.
