I'd like to clarify this, because it's misleading.
Most restaurants, coffee shops, etc. have insecure networks. Even if
you have to go to their webpage and type your password before using
their network, it's stil insecure.
The only way to tell if a network is truely secure is when you're
picking your wireless access point (in settings, WI-FI), make sure it
says "secure" Then, when you connect to that network, you'll have to
type a password.
Another thing to keep in mind is that your email account may be set up
to encrypt traffic for you. You can check to make sure the "use ssl"
button is checked in settings; mail, contacts, and calendars; your
email account, and then the account button.
