Yes, but you have that same problem with the $1200 option. The Apple
Apps VisWiz, O-moby and Google Noggles are alternative that take a
picture of the item and do not use a barcode.

Yes I do that too with Digiteyes. The only problem I have is there is
no standard where the bar code is on various items.

I use Digit-Eyes on my iPhone 4. It works well once I got the hang of
how far to hold the phone from the item, and to move the item or the
phone slowly. The cost is either $19 or $9 in the Apple App Store.

Subject: [Electronics-talk] Identifying Groceries
Hi All,
I have an ID Mate, which I love. It is a stand alone device that I can
wave over the bar code of a grocery item and it scans the bar code and
tells me what that item is. I have a friend who wants something that
does the same thing, but the ID Mate costs $1,200, and she would prefer
not to pay that much. I am wondering what other devices are out there
that work the same way (by scanning the bar code). Please share anything
you are aware of -- iPhone apps as well as stand alone devices.
Thanks,
Sarah
