This is because the camera on the ID mate scans in all directions, while
the camera on a smart phone only looks straight ahead.

I'm not sure if one would have the same problem with the more expsndive
option.
Laser based barcode readers like the ID made do a much better job of
detecting and scanning barcodes at odd angles, distances, and
orientations than the video camera of a smartphone.
