Also, if you're using your computer for Skype, it uses the speakers on your computer for you to hear.  If you have a headset which has a mic, you would hear the person talking with you through those instead.  There would be no need for a speaker phone.

  My understanding is that you don't need a phone number to make a skype 
  to Skype call, but you will need a number if you're going to call 
  someone on their cell phone or land line number.
