Tracy,
The VIP thermostats have programmable capability. This means that you can set the thermostat to come on or turn off at designated times. Typically this means that you set the heat to come on at 6:00 am when you wake, turn off at 8:00 am when you leave for the day, turn on at 4:00 pm when you return, and off when you go to bed at 10:00 pm. These times and temperatures are set by you to fit your schedule and desires. This thermostat also has what is called 5/2 which means you can have different settings for the week days versus weekend days. Also you can just turn off the program and use it as a manual thermostat if you like.
